![]() ![]() ![]() Goldberg and Norman Itzkowitz is less of a biography and more of a history of the Spanish Inquisition. Tomas de Torquemada: Architect of Torture During the Spanish Inquisition by Enid A. ![]() A map of Russia/Siberia is included at the beginning (I love maps) and all the important stuff (index, glossary, source notes, timeline, etc.) is included at the end, making this a good research book as well as an entertaining read. There are also several text boxes at the ends of chapters that examine certain aspects of the story in more detail (for example, there's one about hemophilia, one about World War I, etc.). Photos of Rasputin, different places in Russia, and people important to Rasputin's life are scattered throughout the book (with photo credits on the verso). The action gets going from the first page as the book starts with Rasputin's death (by murder!) and then backtracks to his childhood and the rest of his life. Goldberg and Norman Itzkowitz is an engaging biography about an intriguing historical figure. Grigory Rasputin: Holy Man or Mad Monk? by Enid A. How about one of the books in Scholastic's new Wicked History series? So, the kids are coming in and asking for biographies, eh? And some of them Do Not want to read a biography. ![]()

The homecoming of Irises at Yatsuhashi to New York provided the ideal opportunity to highlight this treasured painting in the context of related works by Kōrin and by other artists associated with the "Rinpa" aesthetic, a modern designation for a distinctive style of Japanese pictorial art that arose in the early seventeenth century and has continued into modern times. In the spring of 2012, Irises at Yatsuhashi was exhibited with great fanfare at the Nezu Museum, Tokyo, alongside another set of screen paintings of irises by Kōrin, now in the Nezu Museum's collection, that is one of Japan's officially designated National Treasures. Among the masterworks of Japanese screen painting in the Metropolitan Museum's collection are Ogata Kōrin's Irises at Yatsuhashi and Suzuki Kiitsu's Morning Glories, both disarmingly simple in composition and yet captivating in their graphic potency. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Precise steps are needed to acquire allies. The New Yorker review of Fever Dream suggests that this novella represents a new genre of storytelling-the reviewer writes: ![]() Always though events are closely anchored to one or another universally human fear: the fear of paralysis the fear of abandonment the fear of dying the fear that one's children are in danger the fear of being trapped. The novel asks you to banish any thoughts like "what is going on?" from your mind as you read, and to yield to its unhinged and unexplained storytelling style.Īs in a real fever dream-as in a nightmare-the events in the novel move in shuddering and unpredictable ways, from the mundane to the terrifying and back again. The story is told in dialog, and neither of the participants in the conversation are fully connected with a rational world of cause-and-effect. As I read I was gripped by a suffocating sense of dread that never let up. I finished the story last night and I'm still magnificently unsettled. ![]() ![]() ![]() T he book’s action starts on December 8,, not at the Dakota in New York City, but at a decrepit abbey in the Welsh countryside where a band fraying with tension has gathered to record a new album.
